How to Connect to Xbox Live with a Wireless USB Dongle

The wireless USB dongle is also known as a USB Modem or Mobile Broadband. This sadly can't just be put into one of the three USB ports on the Xbox 360. So what you'll need to get this to work is a computer or a laptop with a ethernet port and a ethernet cable. You should get an ethernet cable with you xbox360, its white.

Without instructions, connecting to xbox live was quiet difficult to achieve in windows vista. You would think that the Xbox 360 and Vista would be easier to connect together with them both being products of Microsoft. This isn't the case. Anyway now that I've gone through the hardship of connecting to xbox live with my pc and laptop, I've written it all up for you with screenshots. When I did this I used my Amilo laptop and a '3' dongle. The dongle you use shouldn't matter, the instructions will work all the same. Please leave comments and questions using the form at the base of page.

Here we go...

  1. Turn on your Computer and connect to the internet with your 3G USB dongle.
  2. Turn your Microsoft Xbox 360 on and put the ethernet cable into your Laptop and 360.
  3. Now on your laptop click, Start, then Control Panel. From here open Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Within the Network and Sharing Center window click Manage Network Connections on the left.
  5. Select

  6. A new window will open. Right click on your connection and select properties.
  7. Select

  8. A window will open. Click on the sharing tab.
  9. Tick the box for 'Allow other network users to connect through this computer's connection' and select 'Local Area Connection' for the 'Home networking connection' drop down menu.
  10. Select

  11. Press ok in response to the diaglog boxes that appear and restart you internet connection.
  12. Now go back to the Network and Sharing Center, you should have two connections. Both should be public connections and not private. The network type is next to the network connections name in brackets. If yours is set to public your all cool to move onto the next step. If yours is private, click 'Customise' and change it.
  13. Select

  14. The computer is now set up for a free wireless method to xbox live without having to buy the addon. To check everything is in order go over to you xbox 360 and select the 'system' blade. Its on the far right at the end.
  15. Move over to the Network Settings option and click A, the green button on your xbox controller, to select it.
  16. Select

  17. Now move over to the Test Xbox Live Connection option and click A.
  18. Select

  19. The console will run the tests and if all succeds you will get the image below on your tv set.
  20. Select

If this fails go through the instructions again, you could of missed something. Its alot to take in if you know next to nothing about networking. If your still having trouble, leave a comment, or just leave a comment if your happy with the tutorial. Also please visit the google links at the bottom of the page, it helps fund the site many of them are quiet useful! (I will respond to comments if these are clicked) Or donate :)

You are brilliant. Tried for hours with no luck then followed your instructions and it worked. Thanks....

Alright lukect? It uses close to nothing tbh, maybe a megabyte an hour maybe 2?. I showed a friend at work how to do this with his PS3.He uses a t-mobile dongle and it lasts him till the end of the month. He plays Modern Warfare 2 loads and browsers the net. The only thing that'll suck up your bandwidth are the xbox updates and of course if you download any add ons.

Hio, TinTin, as far as I know the cheapest you can get 12 month xbox live membership is from Amazon. It £31 - £33 apose to the £40 shops normally sell it for.

If you click my name on this post it'll bring you to a link where you can get it. Hope this helps :)

Angus, sorry if you wanted to do it without a CAT5 cable, you'd have to buy a wireless adapter for the xbox 360. Bad times that microsoft makes us pay £60+ for what the Wii and PS3 already has built inside them.

Guranga to you though!

Sorted, many thanks, 1 very happy son!!!
Tony, Sheffield, Created: 06/09/2009 17:53:11
Hi Tony, glad the tutorial worked for you! As for your problem with Microsoft asking for your credit card details, thats because you need to verify the account as a parent for you child. This verification process can be avoided by entering your child's birthday to making him over the age of 18. That way no parental consent is needed to join xbox live.
Reabo, UK, Created: 06/09/2009 16:35:44
Thanks for the advice, I am a complete technophobe but it worked second attempt using 3 USB Dongle and XP. 1 very happy son for about 20 mins, then encountered another hitch, I don't know if you can help with this, but given your obvious knowledge I thought it wouldn't hurt to try. Set up worked excellent but when he was registering it went to parental section which requires me to enter credit card details for age verification, I do not have a credit card and was wondering if you knew of any way around this? I would appreciate any help, I have emailed tech support at Microsoft but heard nothing back.

hi,followed ur directions on xp and everything seemed fine until i ran the internet test on xbox.it was ok till it got to xbox live and it said it needed to download an update,i pressed yes and download started for a few seconds then it would say cannot download update check internet conection.this i tried all day to no avail.the firewall in windows was turned off and i checked connections several times as per ur instructions and still same thing would not download xbox live update.i read many sites on the net,it seems loads of people are having the same problem.what i did next was to turn off the firewall in my virus checker which is mcafee secrity centre and tried again this time it ran perfect and downloaded the upgrade to xbox live which now runs perfect.now before i run xbox live i just turn off the virus checker firewall and it works everytime, the windows firewall is on andxbox live still runs.by the way im using a 3 dongle.i just wanted to say thx and to pass on this info cheers m8.ps if u no how i can get mcafee to let xbox through can u tell me please.

I never changed the IP. Only the DNS to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 and I also had to enable to some setting. Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right click 3G > Properties > Advanced > Under the Internet Connection Sharing Heading select settings. I usually check off DHCP (67,) DHCP (68), DNS, FTP Server, Secure Web Server, UPnP (TCP), UPnP (UDP_ and Web Server (HTTP). You may not even need to do this depending on the model of dongle you have purchased.

crazybrent, is it connecting at all? Which dashboard are you using? The old one (look at the screenshot above) or the new dashboard? I suspect its something to do with the NAT of your Sprint mobile usb device. You will need to contact Sprint or Sierra (dunno what the company is called) and ask them is the NAT is OPEN or restricted. It would be cool beans if you could post a comment back with your findings. It would stop people asking the same questions.

Good luck mate!

wayne, wont work for your Nintendo DS. You need a router as far as I understand. You laptop can't be turned into a router or SSID point unless its in a network. You only have a dongle and you can't really network them for a load of computers. So your mullered on that request.

As for Eric the lag your getting on xbl is due to the speed of your dongle. If its a high mbps 3g modem it will not lag as much. If its a low mbps one then I just use this free solution just for updates, like the new xbox 360 Dashboard that's out.

AlexKrycek, I can assure you the Windows XP instructions to connect to xbl are there. But as you were detailed with your comment, I'll repost for you.

Go to 'Network Connections and double click 'Network Setup Wizard'. Click next twice. An Warning box may pop up. If so, tick the box and continue.

You will soon get to 'select a connection method' Select the first option. It talks about other computers connecting to the internet through this computer.

Now choose your USB 3G 3 modem from a list of devices. Now you get to choose the device to share the connection with. Your looking for a device with Ethernet in the name. NOT WIRELESS!

Now keep pressing next until you get to 'File and print sharing'. Select the option to turn it off. Press next until the end. Then click 'Finish' and wait. That should sort you out mate.

Fable 2 is an amazing game. I'm currently playing it :) So I know you want the extras Quett. However you'll need to buy the Microsoft wireless addon for the X360 if you don't want to move anything. Or you could buy a super long Ethernet cable. Both methods would cost about the same I reckon.

Hi Christine! This does work with the imac. I help a guy called Josh and one called Lee to get it working. If you look further down there are instructions on how to do it.

You'll need to access 'system Preferences' then select 'Sharing'.

Now select the 'Internet' tab. You'll see 'Share
your connection from:' Just select 'AirPort' and tick the box for 'Built-in Ethernet'. Now press 'Start'. Caution boxes come up, just accept them all.

Now go to your microsoft xbox 360. Select 'Network Settings' and then 'Edit Settings'. Change the IP settings to Manual.

Now go back to your MAC PC and go to its terminal. Type 'ifconfig en0' into it. This will make some stats appear. The first IP address which appears is your Gateway address this is most likly, 192.168.2.1. Type this into your Xbox 360 along with 192.168.2.2 for the IP address, and 255.255.255.0 for the Subnet Mask. Now save the settings.

On your xbox360 go onto your settings again. This time select 'DNS Settings'. Make this manual.

Once again go back to the Apple MAC's Terminal and type 'dig' and press enter. Alot of uninteresting content will appear. Look for 'SERVER:'. After this will be a long line of numbers. These numbers are your Primary DNS Servers IP address. Type this IP address into your 360.

That should do it, if you follow the instructions correctly. It could take a few attempts.
Reabo, UK, Created: 26/10/2008 10:41:11

Lee, UK, Created: 14/10/2008 23:14:12
Lee from the UK, there is a free way to connect to xbox live with your PC down stair. I have mentioned this in a previous comment to another Lee. You'll need to bridge you LAN and wireless connection for this to work. When you do this Vista will show a loading box saying: 'Please wait while windows bridges your connection'. Look further down at other comments for more details.

Also you don't need to share you internet connection if you have bridged your connection. It should just work. However if you are interested in sharing your internet connection and your sharing tab isn't appearing, read the rest of this comment.

As for the other Lee, please give a location as it avoids confusion. Anyway, I've never had the shared tab issue myself. But from the looks of things your sharing an internet connection already. If you go into your 'Network Connections' folder and look at your connections, you should have about 2 or 3. Go through them systematically by right clicking, selecting properties and checking if your sharing a connection. If you are sharing a connection, uncheck the boxes and then check back on the Network connection you actually want to share. Hopefully that should work. Get back to me with results.
Reabo, UK, Created: 14/10/2008 22:16:55

In my house, there are 2 computers, teh one upsatirs with teh router and the wireless one downstairs, I use the one down stairs which is in the same room as my Xbox. I do not have a wirless conenctor but I have an ethernet cable, is it possible to get Xbox Live without buying anything? I have a 54 Mbps belkin Usb internet stick. I started following your instructions but when it gets to the sharing tab, it says somthing like Windows will not display the properties.

I bridged the connections but I stil can nt get on the sharing tab.

Please could you give me a really basic, simple guide on what to do?

James, Created: 14/10/2008 11:48:45
Nope John this is the free alternative to buying the wireless adapter for xbox live, so no hidden costs.

How does it cope? For me its been really good. I've tried to monitor my connections and it burns about 20mbs per hour. However if your installing updates this can be alot more. I swear when I first connected it up to the net it used about 300mb plus.
Reabo, UK, Created: 13/10/2008 15:39:09
will it cost money as in extra than the line rental for the dongle and how does it work with the 3gb download mate? thanks alot if u can answer my Q
John, london, Created: 13/10/2008 14:45:24
To the first Lee, without a location, a '3 USB' is 3g mobile broadband. It doesn't use the wifi, in essence it is really fast dial up. What you are using is a USB wireless adapter, this uses the Wifi from your wireless point. The way you connect is different that my tutorial above.

You need to go to your network connections folder and find your connection. It'll be called something like Wireless Network Connection. Look for that and look for your LAN card. Select them both and right click. Now select 'bridge connection'. The internet will now go from your Wireless Belkin adapter and be avalible from your LAN card (the thing with an ethernet port). All you should have to do is plug the ethernet cable into your computer to your xbox 360.

In response to Lee from the UK, to get your sharing tab to appear go to your LAN connection in 'manage network connections', right-click and select properties. Go to the sharing tab there (That one should be there) and untick all the boxes. Now go back to your usb modem properties and the sharing tab should now be avalible. It would be good if you could tell me if this works, as I've suggested deleting all your old sets and starting again and nobody has said whether its been succesful or not. Good luck!
Reabo, UK, Created: 13/10/2008 11:37:15
I started following these instructions but when it gets to the sharing tab, it says it will not show it. I am using Vista by the way. What do I do?

Help, I don, understand what you mean by a "3 usb" I have Belkin internet stick. The modem is upstairs and I am really stuck on how to get on to Xbox Live, it keeps failing the IP Adress saying :"Your console was unable to negotiate a lease with your DHCP server" What do I do?
lee, Created: 12/10/2008 22:01:05
Scott if your not getting past the DNS test your must of missed the 'customise' part out. You have to change the connection to 'public' for it to pass the DNS.

As for Nathan, I find it unusual not to pass the Network Adapter Test. That will only fail if you haven't plugged the Ethernet cable into the PC and the Xbox. Check again. If it still doesn't work, your using the wrong type of cable. I'd suggest using the one you got with the 360.
Reabo, UK, Created: 12/10/2008 11:29:15

Anyways took me a couple of go`s to get it setup but I managed to get it to work fine. The only problem I had was that it was too darn slow, I was playing guitar hero 3 online and lost connection every game.
DJB, North West, U.K, Created: 09/10/2008 18:53:57
Ben, if you look at the previous comments between me and Thrawn you'll see what is needed.

You'll have to delete your old 3G dongle connection from your network connections folder. Then set it all up again. The option will then be available for selection.
Reabo, UK, Created: 09/10/2008 17:37:33
Lee Hudson. There are a few ways to get around your Strict NAT. All of the methods however require a router and we don't use one of them with 3G mobile broadband.

The first thing I'd suggest is if you go to your xbox live settings. Look for NAT (Network Address Translation) and see what it says. Make sure it is Strict or Moderate. If it is either of these your gonna have to contact Vodaphone and ask them to sort it out for you. In order for Xbox live to run proper you need three ports available, for reference these are, UDP 88, UDP 3074 and TCP 3074 .

Vodaphone really sucks for there NAT settings, but they block ports for security. I think BT are on a Strict NAT too. The up side is that you can still download Xbox updates. Look out for the new xbox 360 dashboard, it looks pretty swave.
Reabo, UK, Created: 09/10/2008 17:29:14
Lin, with your operating system and laptop the settings above should work with your 3 3G Modem.

All I can suggest is going through it again. If you miss any part above it won't work especially the 'customize' part. That took me forever to work out.

If you do it again and find yourself stuck or uncertain, just leave a message and explain. I'll be happy to talk you through...

Hi,xbox used to be wireless on broadband but we have now got a 3 usb dongle i followed the tut above but we arent getting past the ip address test!!! help !!!! by the way we have a compaq laptop with vista
Lin, merseyside, Created: 08/10/2008 18:47:44
To Lee. Mint you got a result dude and actually posted back. Feel free to email me.

As for Dean, no can do. Your Microsoft Xbox 360 doesn't have the appropriate drivers for it to work. The only way your going to get free wireless internet to your xbox without the wireless adapter is this way.
Reabo, UK, Created: 08/10/2008 18:07:15
can i connect to xbox like what you have shown but without using a computer and just have a wireless dongle with a usb to ethernet connector connecting to my xbox 360
Dean, Created: 08/10/2008 17:58:52
Cheers Reabo mate! LEG - END!!!

I got it sorted it out it took a few tries but the post further down ended up being the right one!

Once I get this all set up i'll drop you an email and add you as mate on LIVE
Lee, UK, Created: 08/10/2008 17:55:18
Yeh, quickest reply ever I think. I just got in from a gig, so Im ripping the CD now and answering emails.

Anyway, I dont have a MAC so I've had a look on the net for another solution and I've come across one. It looks like because the MAC is an apple product, and apple and Microsoft aren't the best of friends its gonna be hard to get your Xbox and MAC to talk to each other for Xbox live to work.

What you'll have to do is configure the Xbox 360 yourself. Find out your MAC subnet details. Once you find this you will have all the information you need to set up your xbox.

Go to your xbox 360 and run the xbox live test. Go to edit settings and input the information that your gathered from your Apple laptop. It'll be stuff like; IP address, Subnet mask, Gateway, Primary DNS Server and Secondary DNS Server.

Once all the data is put in, save and re-run the test. Feedback/Result will be helpful.

Reabo,
I have tried the previous method but it didnt work.

My OS is leopard if that helps any.
The test doesn't get past the IP address it just takes a while to load then says failed.

cheers for the help mate

Lee, UK, Created: 07/10/2008 20:45:43
Lee that is a crazy set up. But nevertheless it should still work. As long as your MAC laptop is getting the internet its do able.

If you look a few comments below this one I wrote how to set up a Mac laptop to work with xbox live for Josh. Tell me how it goes mate...
Reabo, UK, Created: 07/10/2008 20:36:27
Hi, was wondering if anyone had any idea how to help me set up xbox live. this is prob gonna make you laugh but here it goes!
my xbox is connected to my Mac laptop via Ethernet cable. My Mac is connected wirelessly to the internet router/modem. BUT the router/modem is through a windows PC...
Is this why it doesnt work? or is there a way around it by using this very long winded method?

Cheers in advance to anybody who can help!
Lee, UK, Created: 07/10/2008 20:30:02
Ian, if your are not passing the IP part, then there is a big problem you should at least be getting to the DNS test. I need more details inorder to help you. Are you running Vista? Look at some of the comments below, incase you haven't tried my other solutions to xbox live.
Reabo, UK, Created: 04/10/2008 17:41:01
Thanks for the tutorial, I have followed each step to the tee but the ip address check always fails when trying to test the connection, any ideas?
Cheers

Dude, I think the sharing tab may not be appearing because your not an administrator. Other than that there is no reason for the tab not to be there.
Reabo, UK, Created: 03/10/2008 11:05:14
I have orange mobile broadband but when i try to share the connection the sharing tab doesn't appear in the properties window. Any ideas?

Reabo, UK, Created: 30/09/2008 10:27:49
Thrawn delete your old Mobile Broadband connection from your network connections folder. Then set it all up again. Maybe the option will become available.

Sorry dude scrap the last comment on where Terminal is. Its in the Applications folder, then Utilities folder. You should find it in there. That should make sense.
Reabo, UK, Created: 27/09/2008 17:07:31
Terminal is MAC OS command-line application much like Window's Command Prompt. Your Tiger OS will have it. You should be able to find it by looking through your programs.

Also can you just press submit once. I each of your posts have come through four times :s

Hi Josh. I've had a look on the net as I don't own a Apple MAC myself. To do this you'll need to access 'system Preferences' then select 'Sharing'. A new window will load up.

Now select the 'Internet' tab. You'll see 'Share your connection from:' Just select 'AirPort' and tick the box for 'Built-in Ethernet'. Now press 'Start'. Caution boxes come up, just accept them all.

Now go to your xbox 360.

Alot of crap will appear. Look for 'SERVER:'. After this will be a long string of numbers. These numbers are your Primary DNS Servers IP address. Type this IP address into your 360.

Now test your xbox live connection. It should now work. This should hopefully work.

i have a mac so i dunno if anyone can help me set it up its tiger version just to let you know but if anyone can help that would be great thanks :)

If it is a strict NAT could you tell, it's just so I know for future reference.

As for the time being, maybe turning of your firewall will help. If that works, then you can put the firewall back on and you'll have to configure the ports on your firewall so you can use the ICS we just set up.
Reabo, UK, Created: 25/09/2008 10:48:20
Tried that and it still failed the DNS test. I will call sprint and find out if the NAT is strict or open tomorrow. Any other suggestions in the mean time?

I just want to say, thanks so much m8, it worked for me first time! Absoloutely amazing, i not played anything, i just sent few messages and went into private chat. Not sure what it would be like playing COD lol. Prob get kicked out the server, i will check it out later, I am using vodafone usb modem at 3gb per mnth. Did you know these deviced are better if your near a railway? It works pefectly i reach 6 mb in my area i live right next door to railway, (pembrokeshire, wales) When i am in leicester/london i reach max only 3mb. Good luck everyone.. And thanks once again mate! You made a woman very happy.. :)
Donna, Wales, Created: 24/09/2008 19:43:21
Hey Jack. There are two possibilities to why this isn't working for you. The first is your using windows XP. The set up is completely different from my method above. I do have an XP computer and tried another way and it worked.

To set your computer up for XBL you'll need to go to 'Network Connections and double click 'Network Setup Wizard'. Now click next, some minor information here, so press it again. If you see something meantioning disconnected hardware just tick a box to ignore it.

You will soon get to 'select a connection method' Select the first statement. Its talks about other computers connecting to the internet through this computer.

Now choose your USB 3G modem from a list of devices. In your case its Sprint broadband. So your looking for Sprint 3G or something.

Now you get to choose the device to share the connection with. Your looking for a device with Ethernet in the name. NOT WIRELESS! Remember we are connecting the console and laptop with an Ethernet cable.

Now keep pressing next until you get to 'File and print sharing'. Select the option to turn it off. Press next until the end. Then click 'Finish' and wait. Hopefully that will fruit results.

If that doesn't work then maybe it's the second reason that the set up isn't working. This is down to the ISP NAT settings. To find this out you'll need to contact Sprint and ask them if they have an open NAT. If its strict your broadband providers are rubbish because you won't be able to play XBL through a shared 3G USB connection. If its OPEN then you can play Xbox Live via one, and the reason for it not working is that we haven't got your settings right yet. If that's so, we'll just keep at it until success.

Hope this help...comment back..

Chad there is no chance you can just plug your mobile broadband usb straight into your xbox 360. The console needs the drivers in order for it to work. Sucks I know!
Reabo, UK, Created: 24/09/2008 08:46:05
Using XP, with sprint broadband. Made the connection shared, would get the ip but fail DNS.
Jack, Ohio, Created: 24/09/2008 02:40:50
plz help! im gonna get a usb for xbox live , i dont have a computer. my question is u think i can go to my boyz house get my usb activated and take it home plug it into my xbox usb port , u think that would work
chad, Created: 23/09/2008 21:19:40
Dude, that's where mine used to fail. Are you sure you changed the connections to public rather than private. I did that then reset the connection and ran the test again.

What OS are you using? The set up is different in XP.
Reabo, UK, Created: 23/09/2008 11:55:12
I did all of these things, and it failed the DNS test, any suggestions.
